Environmental Planning

Approach

The integration of nature into our urban areas increases livability and improves community health. Consideration of natural features and functions provides opportunities to benefit from the ‘free’ ecosystem services they provide. Our multidisciplinary team offers progressive expertise in urban environmental planning. We have developed urban forest strategies, biodiversity & environmental strategies, and policy reviews & updates for numerous municipalities in BC and beyond. We constantly evolve and innovate our approach to meet the unique needs of each community using the latest science and best management practices

Arboriculture

Approach

The urban environment poses unique challenges for tree health and longevity. Arboriculture helps to minimize impacts of intensive land use and development on trees and forest ecosystems. Risk (e.g. tree failure, disease, wildfire, climate change) must also be managed to ensure public safety and long-term viability of the urban forest. Our expertise in arboriculture is built upon the collective experience of the Diamond Head team, made up of ISA certified arborists, professional foresters, planners, biologists, danger/wildlife tree assessors and GIS specialists. Our broad experience allows us to develop innovative and effective recommendations within clearly communicated management reports and plans.

Key Services

Wildfire Management

wildfire management

Approach

Diamond Head offers a complete scope of wildfire management and emergency response planning. We have collectively been involved in fire management planning from the municipal level to urban interface strategies and stand-level fuel treatment prescriptions. We believe that risk management decisions must balance the safety of human life and infrastructure with ecological integrity of natural areas. We pursue innovation in fire behavior analysis and incorporate new technologies and research that become available.

biological assessment

Approach

DHC specializes in environmental assessments for projects affecting natural areas in urban areas. This includes project ranging from residential and commercial development to civil works, parks and recreation. We inventory and assess the integrity of natural features and functions and identify opportunities for protection and enhancement. We liaise with appropriate regulatory authorities at all levels of government to ensure all projects are compliant.

Ecological Restoration

ecological restoration

Approach

Diamond Head specializes in restoration of degraded natural areas, including the restoration of marine and freshwater habitat (e.g. wetlands, streams, intertidal areas), forested natural areas and grasslands. Our team provides services for all phases of ecological restoration from initial site assessments and development of restoration prescriptions to implementation and post-installation monitoring. Our collective experience and in-depth understanding of the complex functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems gives our team the ability to develop effective restoration prescriptions. We understand growing conditions and plant requirements. Our expertise includes everything from invasive species removal and re-vegetation (establishing and monitoring native plants) to rehabilitation of disturbed sites requiring erosion control, slope stabilization, stream rehabilitation, wetland restoration, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement.

geospatial Services

Approach

Advanced spatial data is the foundation of effective environmental management. Our geospatial team transforms complex spatial datasets into accessible, decision-ready tools for staff, decision-makers, and the public. We integrate high-resolution remote sensing—including LiDAR, multispectral imagery, and drone surveys—with on-the-ground environmental expertise. From modelling city-wide tree canopy now and into the future, simulating wildfire behaviour, delineating sensitive watercourses, to creating digital twins from drone surveys, we deliver defensible, science-based spatial intelligence. We continuously innovate our analytical workflows to support climate adaptation, equitable urban planning, and proactive green infrastructure management.
