grouse mountain trail rehabilitation

DESCRIPTION: Environmental Assessment and Best Management Practices
CLIENT: Metro Vancouver
YEAR:  2015

An estimated 500,000 people hiked the Grouse Grind in 2014. The 850m-climb (in less than 3km) results in a slope that exceeds 20% for the majority of the trail. Due to the steepness of the terrain and heavy volume of users, the trail has required a number of upgrades to ensure recreational user safety and protect ecological integrity and natural character.

Diamond Head provided Metro Vancouver with an Environmental Overview Assessment of the trail which analysed current trail conditions and their impacts to the environment; and provided a summary evaluation of the trail's effectiveness and recommendations for improved management.

Diamond Head's Environmental Overview Assessment outlined the south-facing ecology of Grouse Mountain according to three distinct ecosystems (which served to inform specific management recommendations ), assembled a comprehensive inventory of trail characteristics, and assessed wildlife impacts.
