Kelowna Wildfire Protection Plan
DESCRIPTION: Community Wildfire Protection Plan
CLIENT: City of Kelowna
This planning document provides a background review of the environment and wildfire risks within the City of Kelowna, identifies the level of risk and provides recommendations on how to prescribe and prioritize treatments to reduce this risk. Detailed spatial inventories were compiled of fuel characteristics in and adjacent to the City. The fire behavior potential of these areas was modeled along with the potential consequences to human life, structures and environmentally sensitive areas. The results of this assessment were used to prioritize public areas for fuel treatments. Recommendations for future community planning and design included the delineation of Wildfire Development Permit (DP) Areas, requirements for access, water sources and standards for construction and landscaping. Recommendations were also provided to reduce wildfire risk through preparedness, public education and interagency co-operation.
