Ira Sutherland, Arborist & Junior Forester - MSc., ISA Cert. Arb.

Ira has an interdisciplinary education and research background. His MSc thesis at McGill examined the influence of forest structure on the provision of multiple ecosystem services in BC coastal temperate forests.

His work experience includes developing and leading a forest inventory at the UBC Research Forest in Maple Ridge, BC; doing forest inventory and tropical tree species ID with Aboriginal people at the Smithsonian Institute in Panama; and working with participatory mapped stakeholder perceptions of forest values at CIFOR in Indonesia.

Ira's strong background in forest inventory and frameworks helps him to understand the forest values of Aboriginal people, urban environments, as well as those within the forest landscapes of BC. Ira has worked on many tree inventories and arborist reports at Diamond Head, and works extensively with DHC's arboriculture and urban planning teams.

Ira is author behind vancouversbigtrees.com, the city’s online resource to learn about old-growth forests, and DHC's Twitter Feed @DHC_green
